“At YellowWorkshop, you see instruments made by hand and love for the traditions — with just the right sound of Gnaoua. And if anyone knows the right sound of Gnaoua, it is Hassan, who is himself a young Maalem of Gnaoua music and has been playing the Guembri his whole life.”
Maalem Hassan Laaroussi
Yellow Workshop Founder & Gnawa Master
20+ Years Cooperative
Over two decades of dedication with the revered artisanal Thuja wood cooperative of Essaouira, harvesting seasoned root burls.
Living Gnawa Maalem
Not merely a woodworker: Hassan plays ritual Guembri since boyhood, testing every neck and bridge with genuine spiritual phrasing.
Born in Essaouira
Deeply entrenched in the Atlantic coastal Medina. He knows what moves through Essaouira’s alleys, Atlantic wind, and lila sanctuaries.
Trilingual Direct Access
Direct commission conversations in fluent English, French, and Moroccan Arabic with no broker or intermediary layers.
In the wind-swept Atlantic citadel of Essaouira, instrument making is an inseparable ritual of devotional life. Maalem Hassan Laaroussi grew up immersed in the hypnotic cadences of iron qraqeb and the resonant hum of the Sintir (Guembri).
Trained alongside the master carvers of the historic Essaouira thuja guild, Hassan developed an intuitive dialogue with sacred hardwoods. Where standard commercial production relies on rapid machines and laminated veneers, Hassan adheres to the slow, reverent pace of hand gouges, sun curing, and animal parchment calibration.
Every Guembri emerging from Bab Doukkala is numbered, voice-tuned by Hassan during night recitals, and shipped globally in protective custom-hewn Moroccan cedar crates to ethnomusicologists, world-touring virtuosos, and discerning cultural custodians.
The Sacred Timbers of Morocco
Hassan sources exclusively sustainable, aged trunks from cooperative reserves and mountain orchards, seasoning each slab naturally for up to five years.
Zero Plywood. Single Trunk Resonance.
The soundbox is scooped hollow from a solid billet, preserving the natural harmonic fibers of the living tree.
Essaouira Thuja
Aromatic burled root timber prized for intense swirling grain and centuries of protective coastal resin. 20 years cooperative mastery.
Moroccan Walnut
Dense, chocolate-hued heartwood offering profound low-frequency depth, rumbling sub-harmonics, and enduring acoustic clarity.
Atlas Cedar
Lightweight yet exceptionally rigid. Yields long singing sustain and flawless stability across humid coastal climates and dry interiors.
Moroccan Poplar
Beloved by traditional old-school Gnawa maalems for its dry, lightning-fast attack and immediate percussive punch against camel skin.
Mahogany & Irokko
High-density African hardwoods crafted for modern stage performers demanding electro-acoustic pickup fidelity and structural stiffness.
The 100% Handmade Protocol
In an era of mass-replicated industrial instruments, Hassan protects the slow sacred method handed down through generations of Gnawa brotherhoods.
Atelier Bab Doukkala
Maalem Hassan with hand-carved guembri soundboxes & embroidered cowrie shell hats.
Monolithic Trunk Carving
Zero laminated veneers, no pressed plywood or factory routing. Hassan hand-scoops the body from a single solid billet so that acoustic energy travels without adhesive obstruction.
Sun-Cured Dromedary Camel Hide
Authentic Saharan camel neck skin is hand-shaved and naturally sun-cured. It is stretched wet over the soundbox rim and secured with traditional wooden pegs to produce the drum-like thud essential to Gnawa healing.
Hand-Twisted Natural Gut Strings
Real Atlas mountain goat intestine strings, naturally salted and twisted by hand to exact gauges. They supply warm physical sub-bass pulses unattainable with synthetic nylon or bronze wrap.
Hand-Turned Lemon Wood Pegs & Talismans
Friction tuning pegs carved from hard lemon tree branches, inlaid with camel bone, hand-cut mother of pearl, and brass rivets depicting sacred Khamsa and astral geometry.
